Yellowing and dissolved organic substances are not always removed by mechanical filtration. REEF-SPEC Carbon is activated carbon for marine and reef aquariums that binds such substances to its porous surface. It does not replace a protein skimmer or aquarium maintenance, and is not a dedicated nitrate or phosphate remover.

Before first use

Rinse the carbon according to the pack instructions before use to keep loose particles out of the aquarium. Use a suitable media bag or reactor with even flow. Avoid vigorous movement that causes the granules to grind against each other.

Watch the light reaching your corals

As noticeably yellow water clears, more light can reach the corals. Watch their response, particularly when first using carbon or replacing a large amount. Avoid making uncontrolled changes to lighting and filtration at the same time.

Replacement and checks

Adsorption capacity is limited. Follow the supplied pack instructions for quantity and replacement, and assess the condition of your system. If treating with medication, check its instructions first: activated carbon can remove some active ingredients from the water.
