Chalice corals

Chalice corals stand out for their colour patterns, contrasting “eyes” and often spreading growth. The trade name covers several coral genera, so care cannot be identical for every specimen. Before buying a Chalice coral, check its size, visible tissue and the space you have planned in your aquarium. For WYSIWYG listings, the individual coral in the photograph matters. Our guide to coral photographs and size explains what to check and why colours can appear different under your own lighting.

Space, light and feeding

Leave room around neighbouring corals: direct contact can cause damage, and some Chalice corals also extend sweeper tentacles. Suitable, moderate water movement helps prevent debris from settling. Start with restrained lighting and acclimate the coral gradually; see our guide to acclimation after shipping. Some Chalice corals accept targeted feeding. Offer food cautiously, observe the response and avoid leaving uneaten food in the tank. Our LPS feeding guide provides a practical starting point.
